The Art of Designing: Miami’s Top Designers

A home should be a reflection of its owner and what better way to showcase the best of yourself than through art. Leave behind ghastly white walls and ill-placed pieces and create a compelling space that embodies your unique aesthetic. We’re looking to the experts to show us how to incorporate our favorite art pieces into a room and the best way to achieve a cohesive ensemble.

Have you noticed any ways in which Art Basel influences design requests from clients?

Yes, Art Basel is an excellent way for clients to see many artists all in one location.  Often when we are in the process of designing the architecture and interiors of a home, the client will find a particular piece of hanging or sculptural art and request that we create appropriate spaces to locate and light the art.

What’s your advice for a new homeowner who is looking to include more art pieces throughout their home?

Take time to look at a great deal of art and hone your taste.  For many taste in art evolves over the years.  Because of this it is important to purchase pieces that you really love and want to live with.  Remember, art should be able to move from home to home and to different locations within the same home.  We always encourage clients to create collections that can be beautifully displayed.

How has an appreciation for the arts influenced your own life?

This is a really good question.  I own several pieces that I purchased 15 to 20 years ago.  One is Venus De Milo by Yves Klein and the other a large painting by Jason Martin.  These are very good quality pieces that I enjoy more and more with time.  I had to stretch at the time to purchase these pieces but they have turned out to be wonderful to live with and that is worth the price.

Have you noticed any ways in which Art Basel influences design requests from clients?

Yes, totally. In my case I work with a lot of foreign clients and knowing how important and big the Art Basel event is, my clients want to have the experience of selecting and buying art during the Art Basel week or from the local galleries looking for “local art”

What’s your advice for a new homeowner who is looking to include more art pieces throughout their home?

I would advise you to define where you would place it, the style, size and very important to define if you want an artist that is alive or not, since it can vary a lot of price. How has an appreciation for the arts influenced your own life? So much so that every year for my birthday I buy a new art, the last one I bought was by Peter Lik.

Have you noticed any ways in which Art Basel influences design requests from clients?

Over the years, we have experienced that art became an important element in finishing off and decorating our clients’ homes. I know that Art Basel had and has a major influence on how our Miami clients perceive and want to incorporate art into their interior. We, as designers love it. Because it’s a way to express personality, make a statement and add elements that define a space. Art speaks in so many ways. Not only as a decorative item but with the meaning it has to the individual.

What’s your advice for a new homeowner who is looking to include more art pieces throughout their home?

I see art more as an architectural element defined by a holistic approach. It would take a little more to explore on this. But what I mean is that it’s not just to use art to decorate but rather to use it to set a mood, create an atmosphere that can inspire or relax, focus or redirect energy, create a focal point or visually influence a space when desired. It’s all about creating and influencing the flow of space— and art is an amazing tool to play with.

How has an appreciation for the arts influenced your own life?

I love art! But what fascinates me is the intention and the artistic imagination that is behind the creation. Of course there is always the aspect of beauty—and I am all into that—but knowing the deeper meaning gives me satisfaction and appreciation.
