Your Guide to Art Basel and Miami Art Week

Showcasing 268 exhibitors and running December 5th to the 9th, Art Basel’s eclectic range of art has something for everyone. Paintings, sculptures, photography, film and all that encapsulate the art of today will be displayed at Art Basel, attracting art connoisseurs to celebrities to everyone in between.

Art Basel was formed in 1970 in Basel, Switzerland, when artists Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner and Balz Hilt collaborated to host an art fair. It was an immediate success garnering over 16,000 attendees in its inaugural year to view 90 galleries from 10 countries.

In the ensuing years Art Basel has grown to three host cities, Basel, Miami Beach and Hong Kong with over 250,000 attendees. Art Basel Miami Beach is the platform for celebrating prestigious art and the creative minds behind it, as well as becoming a hotbed for elaborate events, and decked out soirees.

The week of Art Basel is also known as Miami Art Week, where over 20 art fairs take place showcasing international art on a global scale. With endless events occurring in a short time span, we’ve put together a guide to some of the fairs taking place that can’t be missed.

bG Gallery presents John Kilduff’s Ice Cream Parlor at this year’s edition of Scope Miami. An installation and performance by artist and maveric painter John Kilduff, the bG booth will be set up as the artist’s rendition of an ice cream parlor and guests will have the opportunity to have Kilduff serve up his custom ‘ice cream portraits.’

anOTHER art gallery ltd. principally promotes artists whose work is not confined to the normal flat square or rectangular format but are constructed so the boundaries of their works are not arbritrarily controlled by some pre-determined off- the-shelf shape. Established almost 40 years ago in the late 1970s, Studio d’Arte GR quickly focused its activity on the promotion and valorization of postwar avante-garde artwork of clear Latin matrix, favoring those artists who had created a special, personal propulsion and thrust during the triumph and eclipse of “Informale.”

Edwynn Houk Gallery was founded in 1977. Since its inception, the gallery has specialized in vintage photographs from 1917-1939 by the leading figures of the Modernist movement. The gallery has mounted more than 200 exhibitions and published more than a dozen monographs.

Bel-Air Fine Art Miami is the first gallery of the group in the United States. After a few month as a pop-up store in Miami Beach during winter 2016/2017, the group opened a gallery in the heart of Miami Design District.

An interdisciplinary artist, Kate Casanova works at the inter- section of sculpture, technology, and nature. Recently, she has created a series of tiny sculptures such as” Untitled 13,” that explore organic and man-made materials such as rock, foam, fabric, wood, dried mushrooms and found objects. The challenge Casanova faces while working at a small scale is to create forms that, “from a distance, have the power to pull in viewers and then hold their attention with small details when they draw close.”

A contemporary art gallery located in Provincetown, MA. Carolyn Kramer, Founder and Gallery Director, has a clear vision and bold approach to the art scene in Provincetown. The gallery’s mission is to exhibit current, provocative art that motivates conversation and progressive thought.

Peter Freeman, Inc. was founded in 1990 and specializes in important paintings, sculptures, and drawings of the 19th and 20th centuries, with a particular emphasis on early Pop and Minimal works. The gallery is also deeply involved with contemporary art.

Samuel Owen Gallery represents a thoughtfully curated collection of seasoned, emerging, and undiscovered artists.
