Creating An Ideal Covered Outdoor Space

A home’s outdoor space, whether it is a stunning patio with a dining area or an in-ground swimming pool,  can significantly impact its value. A HomeLight survey in 2019 estimated that investing $3,269 in constructing an outdoor patio would increase value by $3,563, which would be a 109% return on investment

Increasing a home’s value and creating a comfortable outdoor space to unwind are two primary reasons why many invest in covered outdoor spaces. A covered outdoor space consists of an overhead covering to protect the area beneath from the elements. Here are some useful tips for creating a picturesque and comfortable covered outdoor space.

Have a Central Gathering Area

When designing a covered outdoor space, it is important to be methodical with its layout. Many home designers center their outdoor areas around a single focal point. Some homeowners use a fire pit with seating, and others use a table or a media device. But the idea is to tie the area to a single point and build outward for an organized, centralized outdoor space.

Incorporate a Green Roof

Many choose roofing that leans away from the outdoorsy feeling. Domed, vaulted ceilings are popular because they offer protection from the elements and have a chic look. But homeowners looking to embrace the outdoor environment should consider planting greenery throughout or along the roof to give it a more earthy feel. While this may come at the expense of weather protection, it is well worth it in warm, dry areas.

Change Levels

Distinguish a covered outdoor space by making it part of a multi-level backyard, creating a sense of separation from the rest of the outdoor area. Many homeowners choose to have stairs leading up to their covered outdoor space, which would be a level above the rest of the yard. Others prefer to have stairs leading down to a covered outdoor space, which would be below the rest of the yard. These methods help make a covered outdoor space feel especially cozy and secluded.

Plan for the Weather

Regardless of where a homeowner lives, the weather will likely be a factor when creating a covered outdoor space. The design of someone’s outdoor area in Seattle will likely be very different from someone else’s outdoor area in Phoenix. Plan accordingly. Those who live somewhere with consistent rainfall but still want to use their outdoor space daily should go for a firm roofing style. Those who live somewhere dry can use cabana-style, cloth roofing, which is best for hot environments. The temperature is a consideration as well. That is why many who live in colder environments ensure that their covered outdoor space has a fire pit or fireplace.

Differentiate the Flooring

A key to creating a separate covered outdoor area is to implement a flooring plan that distinguishes it from the rest of the backyard. People do this in several different ways. Some choose to only pave the covered area of their backyard, so the distinction is visibly obvious between spaces. Others create a landscaped path leading from one paved area to another. Some homeowners choose to use multiple types of flooring throughout their yard, although this can be risky aesthetically. Ultimately, it is important to differentiate the covered and uncovered areas in some significant way.
