Norfolk Harborfest Returns for Its 48th Year

Norfolk, VA | Bruce Emmerling

Norfolk’s maritime legacy is central to its identity, anchored by a major naval base and its prime location along the Chesapeake Bay. This legacy is honored annually through the Norfolk Harborfest, the country’s largest free maritime festival. Regularly attracting tens of thousands of visitors, Norfolk Harborfest will celebrate its 48th anniversary as it welcomes the onset of this year’s summer season in Virginia.

Norfolk Harborfest is a cherished celebration of Virginia’s rich maritime heritage. This iconic Hampton Roads tradition features thrilling activities and performances both on land and at sea. The family-friendly event takes place at Town Point Park, a scenic waterfront locale in downtown Norfolk, and is scheduled for June 7th to 9th this year.

Norfolk Harborfest features a variety of attractions catering to people of all interests. For music enthusiasts, the festival offers three days of dynamic performances spanning genres from pop and country to rock and R&B, showcased across two stages.

However, the main attraction for many is on the water. The Parade of Sail, a highlight of the festival, showcases majestic ships parading across the harbor, offering a captivating sight for spectators along the route from the Elizabeth River to Town Point Park.

Other on-the-water events include the United States Coast Guard’s Search and Rescue Demo, showcasing their rescue capabilities, and the Tug Muster, where powerful tugboats demonstrate their strength and skills. The Ultimate Build-a-Boat Challenge adds an element of creativity, with participants crafting unique vessels on-site and then putting them to the test in a race. Not to be missed are the Harborfest Fireworks Display, one of the East Coast’s largest, and the Harborfest Drone Show, featuring dazzling displays alongside music.

On land, shows and activities include the Red Trouser Show, an acrobatic duo; the Mighty Mike Show, a comedic strongman act; a silent disco, new this year; a pop-up driving range; a body marbling booth; and more.

Prepare to indulge at the Norfolk Harborfest, as over 50 food and beverage vendors will offer everything from crab cakes and smoothies to lo mein and Greek cuisine, complemented by a wine, spirit, and craft beer garden serving delectable beverages.

With no admission fees, this premier maritime festival is the perfect waterfront weekend activity.
