When most people think of Nevada, they probably picture the bright flashing lights of Las Vegas or the salt flats and dry heat of Death Valley. But there is much more to Nevada than that. Nevada is one of the ten largest states in the country, a large, diverse landscape with lakes, mountains, and deserts. It has a vibrant local culture and numerous towns, cities, and villages that offer residents an incredible home.

With most of Nevada’s attention centered around Vegas and Reno, some of the other incredible places in the state get lost in the process. Let’s fix that by exploring eight Nevada towns that are appealing places to move to.

Incline Village is an area on Lake Tahoe along the California border. Affectionately nicknamed “Income Village,” Incline Village is where some of the wealthiest Americans reside and vacation. With incredible luxury real estate options, access to the sparklingly blue-green waters of Tahoe, and numerous trendy shops and restaurants, Incline Village is a stunning area to make a home. Come winter, the nearby Diamond Peak Ski Resort is an incredible destination, and summers and springs can be spent enjoying warm Nevada days on the water.

Roughly 15 miles southeast of Vegas, you’ll find Henderson, a major suburb home to over 300,000 residents. Henderson is considered one of the safest places to raise a family in the entire country but is only a short drive from all the fun of Vegas. Henderson is right near Lake Mead, a beautiful lake dotted with marinas, and has vintage-style homes that stand out. There are also great museums, zoos, and hiking trails within the city. If you’re a golfer, the eight nearby courses will keep you busy year-round.

Carson City is the state’s capital, a city of just over 55,000 in the state’s northwest area, along Lake Tahoe. Carson City is a great city to live in for those that enjoy outdoor recreation. It has top-notch golfing options, mountain trails that make for scenic hikes, and great biking and skiing. It is also a fishing hotspot. It has a prime location just minutes away from Lake Tahoe, Reno, and the Sierra Nevada mountain range, making it the perfect place to be based for a distinctly Nevadan lifestyle.

If you crave isolation and love history, Paradise Valley might be the place for you. This town, which was founded in the gold mining boom that led to a massive migration to America’s west, is near abandoned. It is home to just over 150 residents, but its history is remarkable. It is considered a “ghost town,” with many old buildings still standing and completely abandoned. This gives it’s downtown area a uniquely Wild West look. It is right near the Santa Rosa Mountain Range, making it a great place for hiking and exploration.

Sparks is a city just east of Reno, home to over 108,000 Nevadans. It is a family-friendly, economically growing city with a ton of culture, bars, restaurants, and outdoor green spaces. If you’re looking to do some gambling away from the Vegas crowds, the Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks is a great attraction. Sparks Marina is also a massive park with a waterway perfect for paddle-boarding. The city also has great community events and a fun and friendly vibe.

Mesquite is a small city home to over 15,000 right along the Arizona border. Mesquite is a popular attraction because of its resorts and casinos, great golfing, and proximity to spectacular natural sights. Its desert setting gives it some of the most incredible sunsets you’ll find, and the wonderful spas and museums make it a great place to relax.

Often referred to as the Oasis of Nevada, Fallon is a small city in the Lahontan Valley home to just over 8,000 residents. Fallon is a popular agricultural community, which means the farm-to-table eats in this little city are unmatched. The Maine Street area is where most of the action is, a walkable district with various cafés, shops, and delicious eats. The classically Old West look endures in this little town.

Fernley is a small city not far from Reno and Sparks, home to roughly 20,000 residents. Fernley is a prime area for outdoor exploration, with Pyramid Lake nearby, the Virginia Range, and the Black Rock Desert. If you enjoy adventuring, you’ll find many opportunities for it in Fernley. It has a packed speedway that hosts major dirt track races, great fishing, and is right near the site of Burning Man, one of Nevada’s major festivals.
