Q&A With Karen from @feedyourgirlfriend

How’d you get started in the food social media industry?

I love eating, exploring new restaurants and taking photos of my foods. My husband (my boyfriend at that time) always said that I should start a food page. Our mutual interest is eating.

He often complained that I took photos for too long and he just wanted to eat his food. He challenged me that If I could be a food blogger, he would stop complaining about my long photoshoot. So, I accepted his challenge and started an IG food page (and now he stops complaining ?).

Since my boyfriend always takes me to eat, Feedyourgirlfriend is the perfect name for my page. The concept is just true to the name. It’s a page to guide people where they should go to eat with loved ones.

I also have a marketing background so it’s fun to use my knowledge to grow my social media.

What changes have you noted in the New York restaurant industry since the pandemic began?

Many restaurants are permanently closed. Some restaurants (especially dessert places) closed down their physical stores to focus on online stores.

Many restaurants have to adapt to survive. For example, most ramen places that didn’t do delivery/ takeout pre-pandamic, have to do delivery/ takeout now. Some restaurants have DIY packages to cook food at home.

Many restaurants have to focus more on outdoor dining. Some restaurants create very beautiful outdoor dining areas. (For example, glasshouses with flower decor, chalets etc)

They offer more promotions to attract diners (bottomless brunch, free dishes etc)

What is your favorite thing to cook at home?

I don’t usually cook at home. I just started cooking during 2020 quarantine. After lockdown ended, I rarely cook.

What do you think sets New York apart as a food city?

Multi-culture food scene! New York has every kind of food you can ask for. This city also offers so many trendy foods!

Outside of New York, have you been to any other cities that have wowed you with their food?

In the US, I love the food scene in SF and New Orleans.

For other countries, Japan ?? (Tokyo/ Osaka/ Kyoto) is my fave!. Food in Japan is so delicious! The presentation is top notch too! We can just randomly go to any restaurant and it’s delicious!

Speaking of presentation, it’s so unique, detailed and creative. Also, there are so many themed restaurants (e.g. Pokemon cafe, Hello Kitty Cafe, Rilakkuma cafe, maid cafe etc). They are not just about food. It’s the experience! I would say the food scene in Japan is one of the best!

How has being a food influencer changed your relationship with New York City?

Eating is always my passion and I love exploring new restaurants. So, my lifestyle in the city doesn’t change much.

The only thing that changes is that I have more obligations to get a good shot for my page.
