The Toronto International Film Festival, or TIFF, is one of Toronto’s biggest annual events. Hundreds of thousands of film industry insiders and movie enthusiasts from countries all over the world will gather in downtown Toronto to witness one of the most influential film festivals of the year. In 2020 and 2021, the pandemic dramatically altered the festival, moving it into a virtual and hybrid format. In 2022, the TIFF is returning to normalcy after several long years of disruption.

The first Toronto International Film Festival was in 1976 and took place at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. It has grown dramatically since its launch, becoming one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world. The TIFF has a reputation for generating Oscar buzz; the major films screened at the festival often go on to achieve massive critical acclaim. The TIFF brings some of the biggest filmmakers, actors, producers, and industry experts to the city, and this year will be another unforgettable year of the event.

The TIFF 2022 will run from September 8th-18th and feature a massive range of national and international cinematic offerings. Hundreds of films from more than fifty countries will be screened.

The film for the opening night gala will be The Swimmers, a Netflix film based on the inspiring true story of two young sisters who fled Syria during the Syrian civil war and managed to rise to the Rio 2016 Olympics for their swimming talent. This film will be shown at Roy Thomson Hall, one of Toronto’s most famous venues.

The festival’s debut is what many circle on their calendar, but the Toronto International Film Festival will have hundreds of screenings, including films from some of the biggest names in the industry. This will be an opportunity to watch future award contenders before they hit the theaters, and movie enthusiasts will appreciate their chance to get in on the excitement early.

This year’s lineup features new films from Steven Spielberg, Darren Aronofsky, Tyler Perry, Rian Johnson, Martin McDonagh, Sam Mendes, Lena Dunham, and so much more. Many of the top directors will be present at the TIFF, and they’ll be bringing the A-Listers that star in their films. This film festival consistently draws many of Hollywood’s biggest actors and actresses to attend red carpet galas and question-and-answer panels following movie screenings.

All told, the festival will have more than 260 films this year, along with 18 galas and 45 special presentations. The films are presented in several categories, with awards covering different criteria, including the TIFF People’s Choice Award for the film most loved by attendees. There will also be awards for documentaries, contemporary world films, films by emerging directors, and the Midnight Madness category, which covers horror, action, and sci-fi.

Tickets for the TIFF can be purchased as either individual tickets for single events or package deals covering multiple events.
