Top Lakes and Rivers to Explore in the Tampa Bay Area

Lake Magdalene

Lake Magdalene, in a highly residential part of Hillsborough County, is one of the many pleasant small bodies of water that dot the Tampa Bay area. Houses and scenic parks with trails line the water. Also, a fishing pier is the perfect place for anglers.

Lake Tarpon

Located just ten miles from Tampa and surrounded by natural scenery, Lake Tarpon is a large freshwater lake stretching over 2,500 acres. Many avid anglers go to Lake Tarpon to experience its excellent largemouth bass fishing scene. The lake, ideal for water skiing and other water sports, has boat launches to make getting out on the water easy.

Lake Thonotosassa

Lake Thonotosassa, encompassing 840 acres, is a quiet public lake surrounded by a residential development. This oft-visited lake welcomes anglers hoping to haul in bass, bream, and catfish. 

Hillsborough River

Hillsborough River winds throughout Hillsborough County before depositing into Hillsborough Bay in Tampa. This scenic waterway has marshland and wetlands throughout, which are gorgeous ecosystems to explore. Visitors can walk along pleasant trails by the water, canoe or kayak on the river’s class two rapids, or camp at one of the nearby campsites.

Lake Manatee

Lake Manatee is a scenic reservoir created by damming the Manatee River. The best way to explore this picturesque lake is by visiting Lake Manatee State Park. The park offers trails and campsites, as well as a boat ramp and a swimming beach. Be aware that the lake only allows boats with less than 20 horsepower motors. 

Myakka River

The Myakka River, designated a Wild and Scenic River, flows through several Florida counties and Myakka River State Park before depositing into the Gulf of Mexico. The park, one of Florida’s oldest and biggest parks, is home to alligators, turtles, osprey, and more.
