The Appeal of the Rhode Island Lifestyle Entering 2024

Narragansett, RI | John Angel

Often ranked among the best places to live in the United States, the Rhode Island lifestyle has much to offer. Let’s explore some of the highlights that make living in this state especially appealing as we head into 2024.

Economic Opportunity and Affordable Living Options

Rhode Island, despite its small size, has an economy with diverse job opportunities in a range of fields. Originating as a colonial maritime and fishing hotspot, the state now hosts the headquarters of several companies, such as CVS Caremark, Textron, and Citizens Financial Group.  The state has a significant presence in the medical and government sectors as well. Also, its proximity to Boston enhances its economic allure.

While Rhode Island may not be among the most affordable states, particularly in vacation destinations like Newport, there are certainly pockets of affordability. According to Redfin, in November 2023, the median sale price of a home in Providence, the largest city in the state, was $415,000. In Warwick, another major Rhode Island City, the median sale price was $365,000. These are reasonable prices and generally comparable to the national average.

Scenic Coastal and Outdoor Locations

The Rhode Island lifestyle boasts significant perks, particularly in its scenic outdoor havens. Renowned as a maritime destination, the state’s harbors and marinas come alive with watercraft during the summer, making it an ideal locale for sailing and boating enthusiasts. And the soft-sand beaches, especially in Newport and Narragansett, serve as premier summer hotspots, offering recreational activities such as surfing and fishing.

For those seeking on-land adventures, Rhode Island has numerous appealing hiking destinations, including Wolf Hill Forest Preserve, Arcadia Management Area, and Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge. Also, Rhode Island garners fame for its scenic golf courses, biking trails, and sprawling public parks.

Culture and Annual Events

As we begin 2024, many are anticipating what the year holds for Rhode Island. The state hosts several major annual events, and they are now on the horizon. In Newport, the Newport Folk Festival in July, the Newport Jazz Festival in August, and the Newport International Boat Show in September, are among the eagerly awaited gatherings. In Providence, many mark their calendars for celebrations such as the Rhode Island Seafood Festival in September, PVDFest, and more.

Even in the absence of major events, Rhode Island’s culture is unmatched. The world-renowned RISD Museum in Providence, founded in the late 1800s, offers a world-class art experience. In Newport, the National Museum of American Illustration proves to be a charming and informative destination. And the state’s delicious seafood options and craft breweries have solidified its popularity among foodies.
