Whether it is the big cities, the stunning Great Lakes, or the green agricultural countryside, Michigan boasts a diverse landscape and many destinations worth visiting. Michigan is perfect for those looking to enjoy the Great Lakes’ shorelines in the summer. But autumn might be the best time to enjoy everything the Great Lakes State offers.

The changing leaves and the crisp autumn air make Michigan a uniquely beautiful state in the fall. Let’s look at some of the destinations in Michigan that make for ideal autumn visits.

Traverse City

Traverse City is located along the shores of Traverse Bay, which opens onto Lake Michigan. It is a scenic coastal community popular in the summer for boating and swimming. But come autumn, Traverse City has just as much to offer. Traverse City is famed for its wine, and many wineries near the city offer autumn vineyard tours. You can also enjoy some classic fall harvest activities such as pumpkin and apple picking or head to the Village at Grand Traverse Commons. There are also great natural areas to explore, like the nearby Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore.

Marquette

If you want to explore the natural beauty of Michigan, Marquette is a city that typifies everything this state has to offer. Located on the shores of Lake Superior, Marquette is a small town of just 20,000. Come autumn, Marquette and the surrounding areas are transformed, with the trees turning incredible fall hues. The best place to see the foliage may be Sugarloaf Mountain, where a winding trail leads to viewpoints that overlook the city and surrounding lakes and forests. Taking in the downtown is a blast in the fall, as the craft breweries, restaurants, and cafes are ideal for taking a break from outdoor exploration.

Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor is a busy city in Michigan that is best known as the home of the University of Michigan. There is much to see and do in Ann Arbor and the surrounding areas in autumn. From enjoying some warm cider at the Dexter Cider Mill to apple and pumpkin picking at Alber Orchard, there are tons of classically fall events to enjoy. Autumn also brings the best time to head to the Big House and watch the University of Michigan play at the biggest stadium in the country. Ann Arbor is nicknamed tree town, so while walking through the city, you’ll see incredible fall foliage.

Charlevoix

Charlevoix is a scenic destination situated along the shores of Lake Charlevoix and Michigan. This small town may not have a big population, but it receives scores of visitors throughout the year seeking to enjoy the outdoor recreation opportunities in this community. Charlevoix is popular in spring, summer, and fall for its hiking and golf courses, and it has an abundance of seasonal autumn activities such as hay rides and apple picking. Charlevoix has numerous trails and parks, like Charles Ransom Nature Preserve, where you can find breathtaking views of the entire area.
