There are several top-notch lakes to explore in the Midwest with scenic settings ideal for recreational activities. Let’s look at some of the top Midwest lakes to circle on your to-do list this summer.

Lake Red Rock, IA

Lake Red Rock, located near Des Moines, is a popular recreational hub in Iowa. This large lake is a destination for fishing, kayaking, hikes along the water, and more. The lake stretches across approximately 15,000 acres and has 35,000 acres of nature-filled shoreline for visitors to explore, including several campgrounds for overnight stays.

Saylorville Lake, IA

Saylorville Lake is another well-known lake near Des Moines. This large, sparkling blue lake boasts a pleasant waterfront beach, numerous surrounding wetlands and prairies, and hiking trails around the lake’s perimeter. The Saylorville Marina offers boat rentals, boat slips, and a restaurant.

Lake of the Ozarks, MO

Lake of the Ozarks is a very popular destination in the Midwest with many summer homes. This vast lake is a haven for outdoor fun of all kinds, ideal for water sports and its fishing spots, along with its beaches and many attractions that line the shore. With theme parks and nearby caverns as well, there’s much to see and do.

Table Rock Lake, MO

Table Rock Lake is another large lake in Missouri’s famed Ozark region. It is nationally known as a top fishing site, well-stocked with bass, catfish, crappie, trout, and more. The spring-fed lake’s clear blue water is cold and refreshing in the summer, and its picturesque surroundings make it an idyllic place to spend a day.

Lewis and Clark Lake, NE

Lewis and Clark Lake, a vast lake on Nebraska’s border with South Dakota, is named for the intrepid explorers who visited. Many go to the lake to fish, jet ski, swim, and boat. Additionally, miles of hiking trails showcase the beautiful surrounding area.

Lake McConaughy, NE

Lake McConaughy is a scenic place for camping by the water in Nebraska. This large reservoir, stretching over 30,000 acres, is the biggest in the state. It has white sand beaches, abundant aquatic life, and numerous campgrounds along the lakeshore.

Milford Lake, KS

Milford Lake is the largest lake in Kansas, a vast reservoir stretching over 15,700 acres. Anglers flock to the lake for freshwater finds, including walleye, trout, and many more. The surrounding areas are protected wildlife preserves, so visitors can enjoy some time on the water and then head out to explore scenic, diverse habitats.

Wilson Lake, KS

Wilson Lake is a large reservoir surrounded by a rugged coastline that includes bluffs, beaches, and cliffs. The best way to explore this lake is by visiting Wilson State Park, where you can enjoy a large nature preserve or go kayaking, windsurfing, and/or fishing.
