Tennessee is one of the most naturally beautiful states you will find. Its numerous mountain ranges and the lush forests make it a state with endless spots to explore. Tennessee is a great place to visit year-round, as every season brings something different and fun. However, there may be one time of year that Tennessee stands out most. Autumn in Tennessee brings some of the most magnificent fall foliage in the country, with trees turning the most vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow. Franklin

Franklin is located just south of Nashville. It is a busy community with a distinct southern look and style, with old Victorian buildings lining the quaint downtown. Franklin is a great destination for history buffs, as it was the site of a pivotal battle in the Civil War. Many historic locations in Franklin are still standing, giving the town a charmingly old-fashioned look.

The charming look of Franklin is magnified in the fall, and all the bakeries, stores, and restaurants that line the main street offer fall-themed flavors and items. Take a drive through the Natchez Trace Parkway in October to catch the autumn foliage. This roadway stretches across three states, but is accessible just a short drive outside of Franklin.

Chattanooga

Chattanooga is one of Tennessee’s biggest cities. If you enjoy an urban environment, Chattanooga has that, but one of the biggest reasons visitors flock to Chattanooga in autumn is to experience the natural beauty of its location. Chattanooga lies along the Tennessee River and the Appalachian Mountains, making it a city with stunning scenery. The Tennessee River Gorge is carved out by the river referred to as the Tennessee Grand Canyon, and the changing of the autumn leaves makes it all the more picturesque.

The city of Chattanooga itself is also incredibly appealing. It has a beautiful downtown area that has a growing downtown center and a riverfront with restaurants and shops. The city also has many parks colored red by the changing season, including Point Park, which was the site of an important Civil War battle.

Tellico Plains

Tellico Plains is a small community home to less than 2,000. However, while this East Tennessee community may be small, it is still a must-see for anyone seeking to experience Tennessee in the fall. Tellico Plains is the gateway to some of the most beautiful locations in the state.

The Cherohala Skyway and Cherokee National Forest are just short drives from Tellico Plains, and these are two perfect places to enjoy fall foliage. The Cherohala Skyway runs 43 miles from Tellico Plains into North Carolina, passing through thick forests on either side. It is a stunningly beautiful drive. Cherokee National Forest is a 640,000-acre forest perfect for hiking and fishing in the fall. Millions head here every year, particularly during the fall and summer.
