Memphis in May Returns with Annual Events Showcasing the City’s Incredible Culture

Memphis’s culture is a significant contributor to what makes this city one of the South’s best places to live. Every year, Memphis’s energy, music, and food are showcased in an annual collection of late-spring events known as Memphis in May.

Memphis in May is a month-long event, which began in 1977 to highlight the city and stimulate economic growth, consisting of a series of connected events scheduled for various days throughout May. The event will bring thousands of visitors from across the country to the festivities at Tom Lee Park along the banks of the Mississippi River

The Beale Street Music Festival will be Memphis in May’s first event, which will run from May 5th–7th. The Beale Street Music Festival involves a massive lineup of concerts across three stages. Some of the headliners for this year include The Lumineers, Robert Plant + Alison Krauss, Greta Van Fleet, The Roots, and Glorilla. Tickets are now on sale for single or multi-day passes.

While music might be the first thing people think of when Memphis is mentioned, barbecue is a likely runner-up, and the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, on May 17th-20th this year, is a big reason why. The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest features talented barbecuers competing in different categories to create the most delicious-tasting meats imaginable. Categories include Ribs, Shoulder, and Whole Hog; supplemental categories include Sauce, Hot Wings, and Anything But Pork. Attendees get to be the judges and sample these skilled barbecue artists’ creations. The winners will be crowned.

The Great American River Run is a recent addition to Memphis in May that has become a staple. This event, which will be held on May 27th this year, has several different race options, including a half marathon, a 10k, and a 5k. Participants run a course through downtown Memphis and along the Mississippi River, and the post-race party provides delicious food options.

Every year, the Memphis in May festival honors a different country, and this year’s honoree is Malaysia. Malaysian cultural elements will be incorporated into Memphis in May’s cornerstone celebrations. Also, specific Malaysian-themed events will be held across the city throughout May at community centers, museums, and cultural institutions.

Memphis in May will mark the start of summer with numerous festivities dedicated to some of the iconic aspects of Memphis’s identity. If you’re in the area, there will be plenty of fun events to add to your calendar for next month.
