Austin is known for its unique local culture and bustling nightlife. It is also famed across the country for its great live music, delicious local eateries, and numerous year-round festivals. While South-by-Southwest draws the most attendees and media coverage, it is far from the only festival in Austin offering a uniquely exciting experience. One festival arriving at the end of the summer is sure to provide an unforgettable night for all who attend: the Austin Bat Fest.

Bat Fest is an annual summer event in Austin. It is a combined music festival, art market, children’s entertainment event, and wildlife experience. If this sounds like an eclectic mix, it certainly is, but that is only part of what makes Bat Fest such a blast.

Bat Fest occurs at the end of the summer, one of the best times to see Austin’s resident bat population. The festival’s location at Congress Avenue Bridge provides a perfect place to view the horde of bats that call Austin home. During the festival at dusk, 1.5 million of the Mexican free-tailed bats that reside under the bridge will take to the sky. They’ll fly over the festivities and present a truly memorable sight to attendees as one of the most jaw-dropping Texas wildlife attractions is on display.

Bat Fest is an iconic summer experience in Austin, but it was canceled in both 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. It’s coming up on three years without a Bat Fest in Austin. This summer, on August 27th, Bat Fest will return in style with a packed lineup of performers and the usual exciting features.

Bat Fest has two stages of live music, where some well-known names will be performing. This year’s lineup, spread across the north and south stages, will consist of musicians like Fetty Wap, Chamillionaire, Bun B, The Nixons, and The Unlikely Candidates. These performers range across genres, so there will be something for everyone at this event.

There will also be an arts and crafts market that features over 50 local and national vendors. You can find great handmade creations from talented artists, from jewelry to paintings and photography. Artists will be at their stations, allowing attendees to meet the people behind the artwork and learn more about what they are purchasing. Bat Fest also features great food and drinks, including delicious Austin barbecue.

Bat Fest is a blast for all ages. While adults can enjoy the drink and music, there are events that make Bat Fest an exciting night for younger audiences as well. Bat Fest hosts several children’s activities, including some fun games and contests. The biggest contest, which is for people of all ages, is a bat costume contest. There are separate contests for adults and kids. In each contest, contestants will line up on-stage to let the crowd pick the best costume. The winner of each contest will receive $100.

Tickets for Austin’s Bat Fest depend on the package purchased. Tickets are $25 if purchased online or with cash at the gate. Children eight and under can enter for free. If you want a luxury experience, VIP tickets are $250, and come with perks like front-row access to the shows, reserved parking, food vouchers, and more.
