Los Angeles County is a massive, sprawling area filled with neighborhoods and cities that feel very distinct from one another. Unlike Manhattan, a condensed city with centralized areas, Los Angeles is incredibly spread out. There are places where people both live and work, but many also choose to live outside the city limits and commute to L.A. for work.

There are several desirable commuter cities near Los Angeles that have a lot to offer residents. Whether it is a beachy community with a laid-back feel or a thriving commercial hotspot, there are excellent options for those who prefer to live outside the city. Manhattan Beach

Manhattan Beach is a scenic South Bay community with sparkling waters and sandy beaches. It is a laid-back beach town, home to around 35,000, about a half-hour drive from the heart of Los Angeles. Manhattan Beach has gorgeous real estate options, including contemporary beach homes. Its vibrant downtown has a hip feel with boutique shops and cafes, and its picturesque beaches are filled with surfers and sunbathers throughout the year. It is also perfect for families, with quality nearby schools and high safety ratings.

Glendale

Glendale is a big city, home to almost 200,000, situated just north of Los Angeles, about a 15-minute drive from downtown. It has a nature-oriented appeal with its many hiking trails and equestrian routes and is the site of the Verdugo Mountains and Deukmejian Wilderness Park. Glendale is an economic hub, hosting offices of major brands, including DreamWorks, Apple, and IHOP, so many don’t even have to leave the city for their daily commute. South Pasadena is an affluent little city, home to around 26,000. It is a short 20-minute drive into downtown without traffic, so many residents from here commute throughout L.A. South Pasadena is known for its highly-regarded schools and tree-lined streets, making it perfect for families. Despite being within Los Angeles County, it has a small-town charm and a downtown lined with local businesses and pleasant restaurants. Its classic look and historic architecture have led it to be the shooting location for many movies. It is a safe community with easy access to the big city and boasts plenty of gorgeous homes for sale.

Claremont

Claremont is a peaceful, serene community in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, home to around 35,000. It is situated east of L.A., approximately a 35-minute drive from downtown without traffic. Claremont has a college-town feel due to its many excellent universities in the city, including Claremont McKenna, Pomona, and Harvey Mudd colleges. Homes in Claremont often have scenic mountain views, and Claremont’s downtown is filled with superb restaurants and shops. There are public parks in the area perfect for a stroll as well.
