A Preview of the 2024 Oscars

Step into a cinematic celebration of artistry and creativity at the upcoming 96th Academy Awards, more commonly known as the Oscars. This annual ceremony begins on Sunday, March 10th, at 7 p.m. EST at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. TV personality Jimmy Kimmel will be hosting the event for the fourth time.

This year’s ceremony will honor the finest films of 2023, featuring nominees competing in an array of categories, including Actor in a Leading Role, Actor in a Supporting Role, Actress in a Leading Role, Actress in a Supporting Role, Animated Feature Film, Cinematography, Costume Design, Directing, Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, and more. 

Notable nominees include Cillian Murphy for Best Actor in Oppenheimer, Ryan Gosling for Best Supporting Actor in Barbie, and Emma Stone for Best Actress in Poor Things. Other esteemed actors up for nominations are Carey Mulligan, Bradley Cooper, and Annette Bening. 

Simultaneously released on July 21st, 2023, fueling the “Barbenheimer” cultural phenomenon, Barbie and Oppenheimer collectively amassed an impressive 21 nominations. Barbie secured eight nominations, while Oppenheimer received 13. However, for Barbie, many were surprised that Margot Robbie did not receive a nomination for Best Actress and that Greta Gerwig was not nominated for Best Director. 

This year marks a milestone for ten actors—America Ferrera, Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, Lily Gladstone, Sterling K. Brown, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Sandra Hüller, Jeffrey Wright, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph—as they receive their first Academy Award nominations.
