2024 Outlook: South Dakota

Rapid City, SD | Travis Brown

Let’s take a look at trending cities and the state of the real estate market in South Dakota as we begin 2024.

Amazing Cities to Call Home

Brandon, Vermillion, and Brookings stand out as excellent places to put down roots in South Dakota.

Brandon, a fabulous suburban town, offers residents access to state parks, bars, wineries, and other exciting recreational options. With ongoing community events, those who settle down there quickly become part of a welcoming community. Huset’s Speedway and Beaver Creek Nature Area are among its popular local attractions.

As a small community not far from major cities, Vermillion residents benefit from the best of both worlds, along with a nice variety of restaurants and outdoor attractions in the town.

As South Dakota’s fourth-largest city, Brookings offers a unique blend of adventure, festival events, and historic landmarks. Numerous parks and bars seamlessly integrate into the suburban atmosphere. And popular attractions such as McCrory Gardens, the Brookings Farmers Market, and the South Dakota Art Museum add to the city’s vibrant allure.

A Buyer-Friendly Real Estate Market

South Dakota’s current real estate market leans favorably toward buyers. There’s been a recent year-over-year increase in listed homes, along with a decline in properties being sold above the initial asking rate, as reported by Redfin in December 2023.

In light of current real estate trends, homes may remain on the market for extended periods, providing buyers with increased flexibility to thoroughly consider their options.
