New Braunfels

New Braunfels has a unique cultural heritage that still lives on today. It blends the history of Hispanic and German settlers, and much of the town’s appeal still derives from that shared cultural legacy. New Braunfels is home to around 85,000 people and is around a 35-minute drive to the heart of San Antonio. The city has 41 local parks and many natural areas to explore, and the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers run through the city.

There are still buildings left from the town’s history as a primarily German settlement, including Gruene Hall. Naeglins Bakery is Texas’s oldest-running bakery and serves traditional German meals, and the annual Wurstfest is a popular festival in the area. New Braunfels also has a highly-rated school system and has been slotted among Money Magazine’s best places to live in America in 2020.

Boerne

Boerne is another city with a German influence that still lives on today. This small community, home to 17,000 residents, can be found a 33-minute drive northwest of San Antonio. This small city gives residents several lifestyle perks, including proximity to some of the beautiful nature of Hill Country. One example is the Cibolo Nature Center, a scenic forested area with Cyprus trees and running creeks.

Boerne also has excellent commercial options in the city center. The Hill Country Mile is the heart of the town, with many shops, art galleries, restaurants, and more. It is a vibrant area where you can go to buy everything from a hearty Texas meal to a new work of art for your home. While real estate options are more expensive in Boerne, it is well worth it to reside in one of Hill Country’s most pleasant towns.
