The Niagara region, renowned for its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture, is one of Canada’s premier destinations. At its heart is a thriving food and wine scene that has earned a stellar reputation both locally and globally. Every year, the Niagara Grape & Wine Festival—the oldest and largest wine festival in Canada—celebrates the region’s world-renowned wine culture. This can’t-miss event is right around the corner, and there’s plenty to look forward to.
Held in the picturesque city of St. Catharines, Niagara’s largest urban center, the festival takes place in the historic Montebello Park. As one of Ontario’s most beloved late-summer and early-fall traditions, it offers the perfect opportunity to experience Niagara’s incredible wine scene. From globally acclaimed wines to freshly caught seafood, this event promises to delight every palate.
Niagara sits at the heart of Ontario’s wine production, which accounts for a significant portion of Canada’s overall wine output. As Ontario’s most prominent wine region, Niagara is famous for producing several varieties of wines, including its signature icewine—made from frozen grapes—and exceptional rieslings and chardonnays. At the Niagara Grape & Wine Festival, visitors will have the opportunity to sample a wide array of these local treasures.
The festival’s main events will unfold over three days, from September 27th to 29th, transforming Montebello Park into the Montebello Wine & Culinary Village. Expect food pavilions, live music stages, and more than 100 local wines from dozens of prominent wineries. Local chefs will be on hand, serving up everything from pulled pork sliders to smoked trout croquettes. It’s a feast for the senses, perfect for both foodies and wine enthusiasts.
One of the festival’s most exciting prelude events is “Event in the Tent” on September 20th, featuring live entertainment, delicious food, and a wide selection of drinks. Food trucks will offer gourmet bites, and proceeds from the event will go toward charitable causes.
Throughout the festival, there are activities for all ages. While Montebello Park becomes a 19+ venue after 6 p.m., the festival maintains a family-friendly atmosphere during the day. Sunday is particularly ideal for families, with inflatables, mascots, and other kid-friendly attractions. Beyond wine tastings, you can also enjoy parades through St. Catharines, yoga sessions, and the new “Rock the Park” concert on September 26th, featuring performances by Crash Test Dummies and Kim Mitchell.
Ticket prices for the festival vary by day and event. General admission for “Event in the Tent” is $25 if purchased online, while entry to Montebello Park is free, with food and drinks available for purchase. For a more exclusive experience, VIP Cabana tickets start at $150.
