Miami’s Luxury Real Estate Thrives as Art Basel Expands

In preparation for Art Basel, the prominent global art show in Miami Beach, the city’s real estate industry is anticipating that even more out-of-town buyers will be interested in luxury listings. We heard from premier Miami Beach real estate agent, Nelson Gonzalez, about the impact of Art Basel on the market, and much more!

Have you noticed any impact that Art Basel has had on the luxury real estate market?

Art Basel has definitely had a positive impact on the Miami luxury real estate market, particularly in recent years. In the beginning years of Art Basel Miami, art collectors and wealthy people were coming to Miami to simply attend Art Basel,  art venues, go to events, and party in the city.

In the last several years, however, we have noticed a significant increase in showings of luxury homes during Art Basel week, mostly to out of town buyers. This is because throughout the years these art collectors, wealthy people, and other Art Basel visitors had a chance to see Miami and everything it has to offer. Besides Art Basel week, Miami has diverse and friendly culture, many sports venues, museums, beautiful landscape and beaches, fine dining, and last but not least ultra-luxury real estate and waterfront lifestyle to accommodate these discerning buyers. This world-wide publicity and exposure Miami has been receiving around Art Basel week, and the fact that Florida has no state income tax, has put Miami on the world map. In recent years, Art Basel visitors see this week as an opportunity to not only see art and party, but also preview and buy real estate. December is one of the best months to visit Miami and we are happy that Art Basel week had brought the attention to our luxury market segment.

Miami is a major hub for culture and the arts – which is often reflected in its stunning homes. How do you see this in some of your current listings?

Most of the luxury homes in Miami are built to fit the lifestyle of the luxury buyer that wants to enjoy the water and the luxury buyer that loves art. We have great architects that have created some truly stunning homes, which are an art piece themselves. Inside of these luxury homes you will find art walls mixed with oversized glass windows that allows views of the water and topical landscape throughout accentuating the art. I have one luxury waterfront home in Bay Harbour Islands – 9540 W Broadview Drive – that is filled with beautiful art, and perfect for the art lovers.

What’s the typical lifestyle of a homebuyer in Miami?

The typical lifestyle of the luxury buyer in Miami is focused on the outdoors, beaches, pool parties, and of course boating and other water sports and activities. Therefore, homebuyers are looking to be close to the water where they can dock their yachts. Cycling is a very popular outdoor sport in Miami because we have the perfect weather for it. Pool parties and beaches are an absolute part of the lifestyle of everyone that lives in Miami. Miami’s all-year-round, perfect weather is attracting more luxury buyers from around the world.
