Washington, DC, is a high-powered city that is the center of several massive industries. The defense, political, financial, and government enterprise industries serve to make it one of the economic centers of the United States, which leads many to move to the city. However, not everyone that works in DC can or wants to live in the city. Some prefer the affordability or peace and quiet of a suburb outside city limits.

Many choose to live in smaller towns or cities close to DC and drive to and from work every day. People commonly commute from Virginia or Maryland and enjoy the benefits of both big-city living and the suburban lifestyle all at once. Many of these communities hold their own appeal, making them exciting places to live. Let’s look at some sought-after Washington DC commuter towns.

Bethesda

Bethesda is a mid-sized city in Maryland that is home to around 65,000. It offers a pleasant suburban feel to residents, away from the busyness of DC. Yet, Bethesda residents can easily commute to downtown DC. Driving from Bethesda to DC takes around 20 minutes, while taking the train will only take 35 minutes.

Bethesda is a desirable city with tons for residents to enjoy. It is an arts hub, with famed performing arts venues like Strathmore as well as plenty of excellent galleries. It has highly-rated schools and excellent safety ratings, making it ideal for families. Bethesda also has a thriving commercial district with quality restaurants, shopping destinations, and great public parks. It is a scenic, vibrant city only a short drive from the heart of the nation’s capital.

Chevy Chase is a small town that borders Bethesda, with a population of around 10,000. Chevy Chase is perfect for those that want a private, peaceful community with a small-town feel. It is highly residential and is situated only a 20-minute drive or 45-minute train ride from DC. Chevy Chase is known for its affluence and luxury real estate, and is one of the wealthiest communities in the country.

Chevy Chase has incredible homes on leafy streets and an excellent school system. It has high safety ratings and much to enjoy within the town. Connecticut Avenue is a major area of the city that has many fine dining, nightlife, shopping, and entertainment options.

Potomac

Potomac is a mid-sized city famed for its gated estates and gorgeous luxury real estate. This community is home to around 45,000 and is situated along the winding shores of the Potomac River. While Potomac has a very residential and suburban feel, commuting to DC is easy for residents. Getting to DC takes about 25 minutes by car and an hour via public transport. Potomac is where many of the wealthiest DC employees reside.

Potomac often ranks highly on lists of wealthiest communities in the United States, and it is easy to see why many would choose to live in Potomac. It is a scenic suburb with a thriving culture and gorgeous natural settings. The Glenstone museum is a huge art museum with incredible works from contemporary artists. The Billy Goat Trail is a gorgeous hiking trail along the Potomac River, and Potomac residents have easy access to the renowned Great Falls Park.
